In recent years, we have been witnesses and part of society to the wear and tear, and degradation of the environment due to the use of resources that make up our development systems. For this reason, it is necessary to implement measures to reduce the environmental impact that human activity has had on biodiversity, promoting a more sustainable future.
In this context, every year we celebrate occasions such as World Bike Day, where we collectively promote the visibility of environmentally friendly alternatives in various areas of our daily lives, such as means of transportation. Although it is true that on previous occasions I have reflected on the importance of sustainable mobility, this time I want to share with you a more comprehensive perspective, with added value for our planet.
Committing to sustainable mobility
Mobility is a fundamental aspect of growth and social development and, for this reason, several countries are in the development and implementation phases of initiatives and projects that include mobility as an instrument for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For example, Amsterdam, although its commitment to the use of bicycles as the main means of transport is not new. In recent years, it achieved that 60% of urban journeys are made by bicycle thanks to the network of bicycle lanes implemented. It is also part of the “Clean Air 2025” program, which aims to eliminate CO₂ emissions from traditional vehicles.
Another case is the city of Seville, where the impact that sustainable technological innovation can have on our future is reflected. The integration of technologies for the management of transport services has made this city the first to offer a comprehensive digital application where citizens can locate and book available transport from their mobile devices. In short, what they do in these cities leaves us with several lessons learned.
I leave you with one thought:
It is in our hands to carve the future we want for the new generations and drive the change towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle.
