Between January 27th and 29th, we had the opportunity to participate in PETROWEEK, an academic event presented by the School of Petroleum Engineering of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, in alliance with the professional student chapters ACEIP, SPE, SPWLA, and ACIPET.
During the three days of the event, we had the opportunity to talk and reflect on the oil industry and the hydrocarbon sector. I was especially interested in the conversation generated around the challenges and opportunities of the industry in Colombia.
From a long-term perspective, Colombia’s oil sector is one of the most attractive hydrocarbons markets in South America. During the last years, the oil sector has presented a robust development, with strong bases and investment in research and development. These conditions have allowed identifying many risk factors to mitigate, thus achieving positive sector growth in the next years.
Besides, the industry’s contribution to the Colombian economy is significant. According to the National Planning Department, the sector’s GDP amounts to 44.2 trillion pesos (0.6% of the national total). Moreover, according to DANE, crude oil exports generated 20.9 trillion pesos revenues (55% of total exports) for Colombia.
It appears that Colombia wants to boost oil exploration with technical and environmental standards. The key is that the installed hydrocarbon recovery techniques allow taking the best possible advantage of the Colombian reserves. This aspect will become an essential element that will mark the country’s competitiveness in the sector, improving the industry profitability.
The future of the industry in Colombia depends on designing an oil production system capable of reducing the emissions and environmental impacts of the process as much as possible. This scenario is what we like to call at Nakasawa “the era of Green Fossil Energy: optimizing to the maximum what we have while maintaining the evolution towards the energy transition”. There must be a balance between fossil energy and alternative energy sources until we achieve a sustainable development, guaranteeing supply.
During this crisis period that presents a difficult scenario for investments, at Nakasawa, we can help improve existing fields’ performance with our Super Matroid Heater and Super Matroid Cyclone technology.
