Today, January 28, we celebrate the World Day for Action on Global Warming, also known as the World Day for the Reduction of CO2 Emissions. This day was declared by the United Nations to “raise awareness and sensitize population about climate change.” A goal that, if asked, I would state that is not very ambitious compared to the global climate crisis we are experiencing. This opinion does not mean that I want to downplay the need to raise awareness of global warming and the effects of carbon emissions. However, I think it is time to shift our perspective, stop the talk, and start acting more decisively.
Worldwide governments, businesses, environmental organizations, and consumers themselves want to be part of the fight to stop this global problem of which they are well aware. Unfortunately, in their desperate attempt to be part of climate action, thousands of worldwide organizations make empty promises on this one day of the year that allows them to create an illusion. They rush to announce conveniently ambitious targets and boast their climate credentials, setting goals they rarely meet. And while some have the best intentions to do so, there is no strategic plan to achieve them.
How can we take action? Personally, I believe there are concrete actions that companies can implement and demonstrate more purpose and effort for change than setting unattainable goals. These are:
- Measure and report their carbon emissions to track their evolution and determine the needed effort.
- Incorporate strong carbon reduction efforts into their business strategies and objectives.
- Collaborate with other companies in the sector to accelerate climate action.
- Lead or participate in discussions with legislators, suppliers, employees, and local communities.
- Invest in projects and technologies that ensure low carbon emissions.
With these kinds of actions, we will be able to truly see a shift from words to real involvement, which requires dedication, commitment, and responsibility to put into action. On this Global Day of Action on Global Warming, I call on all of us to switch from talking to acting.
